Robert Scott

I grew up making things. I trained as an aircraft fitter in Preston, then travelled through New Zealand and Asia — a lot of what I make still comes from what I saw there. After that I went to university to study furniture, and I have worked under my own name ever since.

The pieces sit between sculpture and furniture. What I am after is balance: drama and movement held together so the whole reads as one gesture.

How a piece is made

01The conversation. The size it has to be, the room it goes in, and the timber — walnut, oak, fumed oak, ash.
02The drawing. Ideas sketched in a book and talked through with you, until we settle on one. When you are happy with it, I start.
03Timber. Curves are bent from many thin layers drawn round a former; heavier forms are carved out of thicker boards glued flat, one on another.
04Shaping. An Arbortech takes off the bulk, then chisels, files and rasps.
05The finish. Over every surface again until nothing is inconsistent anywhere on it. Oil, usually.
